The Mutants are a gang in Gotham City, who were formerly led by Terence Shaw, and later the Mutant Leader.

History

The Mutants are a gang who run fight clubs in Gotham. They are approached by Alfred Pennyworth and Bruce Wayne who are both searching for Matches Malone. Their leader Terence "Cupcake" Shaw challenges Alfred to a brawl rather than just accepting $50,000 by Bruce. Alfred reluctantly agrees and manages to subdue Shaw, who then tells them to meet Jeri at the Celestial Gardens to find Malone.

When Gotham City was declared no man's land, another faction of Mutants took up residence in an unnamed posh area of Gotham City that was classified as the Dark Zone. The group ran into Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. While Bruce fought the Mutants, Selina took on the Mutant Leader. She beat him into submission until Bruce intervened. The Mutant Leader answered their question on where Jeremiah Valeska is by stating that he was last seen at the Old Town Church.

Trivia

• The Mutants first appeared in Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns in 1986. They were introduced as a youth gang who surfaced in Gotham City after Bruce Wayne's retirement as Batman and applied brutal methods and also had advanced weaponry and vast members. Batman went up against their Mutant Leader after returning to fighting crime after a ten year retirement. Upon the Mutant Leader being defeated, the group disbanded where some of them came together as the Sons of Batman.
