The Mayor of Gotham City is the head of the executive branch of the government of Gotham City and the Chief Executive of Gotham City. The Mayor's office administers all city services, public property, police and fire protection, most public agencies, and enforces all city, state and local laws. The Mayor is also the chairman and presiding officer of the Gotham City Council and is headquartered at the Gotham City Hall. Considering the high crime rate in Gotham, being elected Mayor was often a risky profession.
Administration and Staff[]
Once elected, the Mayor is at liberty to choose their own staff and administrative personnel. The Deputy Mayor is an individual chosen by the incumbent to temporarily replace him should he become incapacitated. Harrison Kane served as Deputy Mayor under Aubrey James. Kane briefly stepped in as acting Mayor after James was abducted. Another important role is the Mayor's Chief of Staff. This individual is charged with advising the Mayor on important political matters as well as running the office's day to day activities. Under Oswald Cobblepot, Edward Nygma was released from Arkham to serve as Chief of Staff until his departure when Cobblepot appointed Tarquin Stemmel to fill the vacancy. The Mayor is also in charge of appointing the Police Commissioner.
