The Gotham Museum of Antiquities, also known as simply Gotham Museum, is a prominent museum located in Gotham City.

History[]

As one of the most outstanding museums in Gotham, the Gotham Museum of Antiquities exhibited various precious artifacts such as old amulets made out of gold or the legendary Russifer Diamond, which were all kept under strict security measures and protected with glass cases.[1]

During No Man's Land, the Penguin had his henchmen raid and loot dozens of buildings and museums all over Gotham City.[2] They also managed to steal the Russifer Diamond from the Gotham Museum of Antiquities, which Cobblepot then kept in his underground treasure chamber at Gotham City Hall along with many other valuable artifacts he had stolen during the Cataclysm crisis. However, the Russifer Diamond was later stolen by jewel thief Magpie.[3]

At some point following the reunification with the mainland, the city authorities managed to recover the Russifer Diamond, whereon it was returned to its rightful place at the Gotham Museum of Antiquities. Ten years after the end of No Man's Land, the Russifer Diamond was stolen by jewel thief Selina Kyle, who was able to manoeuvre her way around the lasers that secured the diamond and used her Clawed Gloves to cut a hole into the museum glass case. While Catwoman stole the diamond, she was observed by the Dark Knight, who had come to Gotham City and noticed during his late-night patrol that someone invaded the museum. However, realizing it was Selina, he did not interfere. When both later met on a rooftop the following night, Bruce told Selina to return the diamond to the museum. However, once Bruce had vanished after he saw the GCPD Spotlight light up in the distance, Selina simply responded "like hell" with a smirk on her face.[4]

Notes[]

  • In the episode "Legend of the Dark Knight: Ruin", Penguin planned to have Victor Zsasz executed, for which he had his men prepare a vintage guillotine during the tribunal. Writer James Stoteraux later confirmed that the guillotine was one of the objects that Cobblepot had "raided from the Gotham Museum of Antiquities".[5]
  • In DC Comics, the Gotham Museum of Antiquities is known as one of the most prominent museums in Gotham City, essentially appearing as the city's main museum. Although it had appeared under the name "Gotham City Museum" for decades, it was not until the comic The Man of Steel #3 (1986) that it was given the official name "Gotham Museum of Antiquities". In the comics, the Gotham Museum of Antiquities is known as the place where Margaret Pye originally worked as a curator before she became the kleptomaniac villain Magpie. Her obsession with owning the shiny objects she was surrounded with day after day eventually drove her insane and she started to pursue a life of crime.
  • This is the fourth live-action appearance of the Gotham Museum of Antiquities, following the 1966 TV series Batman (where it was still known as Gotham City Museum), the 1997 film Batman & Robin, and the 2016 DCEU film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Gotham Museum of Antiquities later also appeared in the 2019 TV series Batwoman.
