The cigarette holder is a fashion accessory owned by the Penguin. It is a slim tube used to hold cigarettes for smoking.

History[]

Penguin owning a cigarette holder was predicted during a vision Bruce Wayne had when he was hallucinating after being poisoned by Ivy Pepper. In this hallucination, Cobblepot was wearing his future top hat and was smoking a cigarette from his holder. He then had the cigarette holder in his left hand when he, Barbara Kean and various other people listened to a funny story told by Bruce Wayne's doppelganger. Since he was focused on Bruce's speech, he apparently didn't realize that he was holding the cigarette right over Barbara's left shoulder, risking to drop ashes on her dress and body.[1][2][3]

As it later turned out, many aspects from the vision caused by Ivy's powers eventually came true. When the Penguin was released from Blackgate Penitentiary ten years after the end of No Man's Land, he was actually owning a cigarette holder, which he kept in his left upper suit pocket. The cigarette holder was visible when Cobblepot and the Riddler encountered the Dark Knight for the second time, right after the two villains had escaped from a prison transporter.[4]

Season 5[]

Notes[]

  • In the DC Comics, the cigarette holder along with the monocle, top hat and umbrella is one of the Penguin's most significant and recognizable items. The cigarette holder became even more iconic when it was steadily used by Burgess Meredith's Penguin in the 1966 Batman television series.
  • This is the third live-action version of Penguin's cigarette holder, with the first being in the 1966 Batman TV series and its related movie, and the second one being a brief cameo in the 1992 movie Batman Returns.

Trivia[]

  • While the Penguin is never properly seen smoking his cigarette holder in the series finale, the item's presence in his suit pocket implies that he must have started to smoke at some point during his ten year prison sentence.
  • During Bruce Wayne's dream in season 4, a careless Oswald is seen holding his ash dropping cigarette holder right over Barbara's shoulder. This might be a subtle way for Bruce's subconsciousness to reflect the strong hatred and negative tension between Penguin and Barbara.
