Ellens dritter Gesang, also referred to as Ellens Gesang III »Hymne an die Jungfrau« or commonly Ave Maria, is a 1825 hymn from the Op. 52 by Austrian composer Franz Schubert. It is one of Schubert's most famous works and was based on the 1810 narrative poem The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott.
The composition was played at the Sirens nightclub when Barbara Kean and Tabitha Galavan were discussing the state of Gotham City's criminal underworld. Tabitha then proceeded to shoot the crime lords present at the club while Barbara called Edward Nygma and told him that everything was set and that he could now move to the next phase of his plan to destroy the Penguin.[1]
Ave Maria was a favorite of Lazlo Valentin, who played a vinyl record featuring the song in the recreation room of Arkham Asylum. While he was enjoying listening to the hymn, another inmate became angry because the musical piece reminded him of his mother. Professor Pyg then broke another vinyl that was next to the phonograph in two and used one of the sharp ends to kill the other inmate.[2]
