The Defibrillator Mask is a specialized medical device that can be used to help stabilize someone after they have been mortally injuried. Nyssa al Ghul equipped Eduardo Dorrance with a mask after he was impaled.

Becoming Bane[]
During a fight with Jim Gordon Eduardo is impaled and left for dead. Nyssa al Ghul comes to Gotham after having been ousted from her position as Secretary of Homeland Security and uses the mask to save Eduardo’s life, promising to make him strong again. Eduardo presumably continues using the mask until Nyssa takes him to Hugo Strange who equips him with a Life Support Suit that not only saves his life but enhances his strength.
